After a cold snap with heavy rain in September, the warm weather returned with temperatures up to 21 degrees Celsius late in the month and even well into October. The rowan berries have been amazing. Then the late summer ended abruptly last week with a run of cold easterly winds. Fieldfares have arrived from the Arctic, even though a late departing house martin was still around last week. The ground is getting wetter with mushrooms coming through, the nights getting colder... and there is a rich tapestry of colours and textures up on the Moors, with some late heather mixed in with the bracken and bilberries... probably the best time of the year up here.
