Up here in Northern England, and possibly nowhere more so than right here in the North York Moors, we currently have a stunning display of cotton grass.... dense white carpets sweeping across the Moors.... possibly due to the very wet summer we had last year.

The last few weeks have been hot and dry and the Moors are tinder dry. Butterflies are on the increase now to their peak in late August, and out on the Moors at dusk, there is a profusion of moths. Wasps have been scarce this year due to the warm spell in February 2012 which brought the Queens out before there was an adequate food supply, resulting in a very poor breeding season.
